The
sacred ritual
of purifying with smoke
comes from native tradition
which says where sage & cedar are used, evil
influence may not enter. The term “smudge” means
to purify with smoke from certain sacred herbs.
To purify your body,
home, office, or healing room, ignite the bundle
over an Abalone shell or ceramic bowl containing
sand.
Never blow on the herb
or sweet grass being burned, as this will blow the purifying
spirit out of the bundle. To keep the bundle
burning, fan with a smudging
feather or move the bundle while
walking to give it air.

| Sweetgrass
has many uses. It is used as a purifying medicine in prayer,
smudging, and other such ceremonies. When Sweetgrass is
burned, (smudging), the smoke of Sweetgrass is meant to cleanse
the body and open the mind.
The name
itself describes a plant that is a type of grass with a sweet-smelling
aroma.
When Sweetgrass is burned, it smells good and brings feelings
of peace
and relaxation.
Each braid
of Sweetgrass represents an aspect of self: Mind, Body and
Spirit.
